The overlapping edges of a thermoplastic wrapping 12 on a package 10 are sealed by placing the package 12 on a heat-resistant sheet 18 and sliding the sheet 18 over a heated platen 15, the sheet 18 being of such material as will not adhere to the heated wrapping 12. The sheet 18, which is preferably glass cloth impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene and mounted on a wood or fibre-board frame 19 is slidable on a table 14 recessed to carry the platen 15.
