644,494. Forming irregularly-shaped packages. WINGFOOT CORPORATION Jan. 19. 1948. No. 1570. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1947. [Class 94(i)] Apparatus for the packaging of fruits, vegetables and other articles between two plies of thermoplastic, heat-sealable film reinforced by apertured sheets of cardboard or similar material, comprises a work table having one half 44 secured to a supporting frame 16 and the other half 46 hinged to the frame by means of pivots 41, 42 so that it may be swung over on to the half 44. Each half is formed with apertures 45 for the reception of the articles and is covered by a perforated rubber pad 10 formed with aligned apertures. A top cover 15 carrying resistance coils 14 is hinged to the frame at 17. In use, an apertured sheet of cardboard scored along its centre line is laid on the table and a film of rubber hydrochloride adhesively secured to its upper surface. The cover 15 is then swung down and the resistance coils switched on to apply heat to the film. Lemons, or other articles to be wrapped, are then pressed into the openings in one half of the cardboard to stretch the film, and the half 46 swung over and secured by clamps 50 to double the cardboard and apply sealing pressure to the contacting surfaces of the film. The resulting package is shown in Fig. 6.
