Abstract

894,662. Hand-made colour separations for halftone procedures. PRINTING ARTS RESEARCH LABORATORIES Inc. May 16, 1960 [June 10, 1959], No. 17144/60. Class 98(2). A base art copy, as shown of a house with sky and foreground areas, is provided in black and white and overlaid with at least one sheet of ultraviolet light transmitting transparent film material to which an ultraviolet light absorbing transparent liquid colouring material of a single hue is applied in register with portions of the copy, and individual halftone negatives are made directly from the copy and from the coloured sheet after separation thereof. For full colour work three sheets using red, blue and yellow respectively are required, resulting in four halftone negatives, from which the corresponding printing plates may be made. A liquid colouring material using a resin and 4-methyl-7-diethylamino-coumarin- 2,2<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-tetrahydroxy benzophenone in an organic solvent mixture with the appropriate dyes is exemplified and the recommended procedure therewith is quick brushing over the desired area and attainment of register by scribing. Variations may be made to result in "drop-out" type negatives. The second and third transparent sheet may overlay the first and second for the colouring and for this they may be hinged to a further sheet or artists board carrying the copy, as shown in Fig. 2.
