Abstract

894,351. Control of A.C. motors; protective arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 27, 1960 [May 7, 1959], No. 14706/60. Classes 38 (3) and 38 (5). A control system for a synchronous motor 2 having a field-winding 4 adapted to be connected over a field contactor 14 to D.C. excitation leads 8 comprises circuits 26, 28, 24 which initiate field excitation by way of a power switching and amplification circuit 30 when optimum conditions for synchronization occur, and a pull-out protection circuit 44 for deenergizing the operating coil 16 of the contactor 14 when a pull-out occurs. As shown, the circuit 44 embodies NOR elements, i.e. circuit apparatus adapted to provide an output in the absence of an input to the apparatus. On NOR element 512 is connected to respond to the induced alternating current in the fieldwinding 4 and has its output connected to another NOR element 516. The element 512 is connected to the field-winding 4 by way of a voltage divider circuit 500, 502, 504 and a differentiating circuit comprising capacitor 506, resistor 508 and potentiometer 510, the arrangement being such that pull-out conditions cause the element 512 to remove its output whereby element 516 provides an output to the power switching and amplification circuit 30 which acts to de-energize the operating coil 16 of the field contactor 14. Means are provided for by-passing the NOR element 512 during synchronization of the motor.
