Abstract
894,194. Nuclear fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Dec. 2, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 39094/58. Class 39(4) In a nuclear fuel element comprising fissile or fertile material 2 enclosed in a can having a tubular part 1 and an end closure member 4, the end member has heat exchange fins 11 and a peripheral wall 5 which encircles an end of the fuel and is sealed to the tubular part of the can at 6. An alumina backing ring 7 is provided to prevent contamination of the seal and also to act as a thermal insulator. The fins 11 may form a continuation of the fins 10 on the tubular part of the can and may be longitudinal or helical. Heat insulating material 12 may be provided as described in Specification 894,193. Movement of the fuel within the can is prevented by peripheral grooves 14 into which the sleeve 1 is collapsed by pressure. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the peripheral wall of the end member lies inside the end of the tubular part and is lap-welded thereto. According to the Provisional Specification, the ends of the peripheral wall and the main tubular part may be formed with outwardly extending flanges which are welded together.
