Abstract

893,861. Friction gearing. ANGUS & CO. Ltd., GEORGE, and FEARNS, S. July 31, 1958 [Aug. 8, 1957], No. 25046/57. Class 80 (1). In epicyclic friction reduction gearing comprising a number of similar caged ball or rollerbearings mounted coaxially by their outer races 2 in a cylindrical housing 3, the cage 8 of one being connected to the inner race of the next, helical, rubber or diaphragm spring end loading 22 is provided to increase the contact pressure. As shown, the outer races 2 of three ball-bearings are held against rotation in the housing 3 by corrugated spring bands which allow limited axial movement. An input shaft 15 has a boss 7 carrying the split inner race of the first bearing whose cage 8 is integral with a sleeve carrying the split inner race of the second bearing. Similarly the cage 8 of the second bearing drives the split inner race of the third bearing, whose cage drives the output shaft 12. Opposed pairs of dished spring washers 22 are provided to load the split inner races. In a modification the outer races are split and are loaded by helical springs. In this construction the gearing is mounted on the end of a motor, and successive cages and inner races are coupled by tongues on the cages engaging slots in the races. In other modifications double row oblique contact ball-bearings are used, only one row of which need be caged. Alternatively, tapered roller bearings may be used.
