893,697. Seaming; severing by burning. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Aug. 11, 1958 [Sept. 24, 1957], No. 25705/58. Classes 31 (1) and 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] Envelopes are made by folding a web longitudinally, clamping it transversely at spaced intervals and applying radiant heat between the clamps to cut the web and seal the cut edges to form side closing and enlarged corner beads. The envelopes are then filled and their upper ends clamped beneath their mouths, radiant heat being applied to the latter to form a beaded closure seal. Making envelopes.-A thermoplastic web of, for example, polymeric ethylene terephthalate ester film, passes over guide rollers 44, 46 and between static eliminators 45 to folding members 47, 48 which double it longitudinally (Fig. 6). The fold is rendered sharp by pressing between heated blocks 50, 51 and the web is forwarded between sealing and severing members 60, 61. The members 60, 61 comprise respectively fixed and movable blocks 60, 61 (Figs. 9, 10, 14) the faces of which are slotted at 63 and 91 corresponding to the positions of transverse sealing and severing. Areas corresponding to the envelope sides may be relieved as at 65, 94. The slots lead into clearance apertures 70, 92. Heated wires 71 mounted on a head 74 are movable within the slots 63 by pneumatic cylinder means 81 and when the web has been clamped, the wires approach but do not contact the material to cause it to sever and form beaded seams 34. The slots 63, 91 widen in the vicinity of the fold so that the corners of the envelope have larger beads 35. The heat may be applied in two stages. Air from jets 105 cools the seams and together with further jets through passages 69, 98 eject the envelopes when the members move apart under the action of a pneumatic cylinder 100. The envelopes fall on to a shoot 113. The web is fed intermittently by a reciprocating blade 106 engaging from within the web fold, the rearmost transverse seam. Filling and sealing the envelopes.-The envelopes may have a suture 37 and card 38 (Fig. 2) placed within them and are then sterilized and filled with sterile tubing fluid. Filling is carried out by unspecified known means. The filled envelopes are placed in a horizontally movable holder 212 (Figs. 5, 16, 17), one half of which may be loaded while the other half is in the sealing position. Sealing is carried out by fixed and movable jaws 202, 203, the latter being connected by rods 204 to a pneumatic piston and cylinder means 207, and a heated tape 216. The tape, retained stretched by springs 219 is brought adjacent the envelope lips after clamping of the material just below them by the jaws. The lips melt to form a sealing bead 41. Operation of the jaws and tape is automatic and is timed, movement of a cam 214 on the holder 212 past a switch 215 initiating the cycle. Specification 747,162 is referred to.
