Abstract

An improved process for the production of aromatic di-hydroperoxides comprises oxidising a dialkyl aromatic compound of the formula R2CH.Ar.CHR2 where Ar represents an aromatic residue and R represents an alkyl group, extracting the oxidation mixture with aqueous alkali, treating the alkaline extract with an organic solvent for by-products of said oxidation contained therein to obtain an organic phase containing said by-products, subjecting the organic phase to hydrogenation and returning it to the oxidation stage. The organic solvent may be an alcohol, ether, ketone or chlorinated hydrocarbon or preferably the dialkyl aromatic which is oxidised and the hydrogenation may take place in one or more stages, e.g. at elevated temperature and pressure over a nickel catalyst. Examples relate to the treatment of m-di-isopropylbenzene di-hydroperoxide.
