Abstract

A stable waxing dispersion product comprising a dispersing medium and a mixture of a substantial proportion of a paraffinic wax in association with a polymerized film-forming vinylidene monomer, at least a portion of which is in the form of a graft copolymer with the paraffinic constituent, is made by dispersing the paraffinic wax and the monomer in a non-polymerizable liquid vehicle and subjecting the mixture to high energy ionizing radiation. Waxes specified are polyethylene waxes having molecular weights between 1,500 and 6,000. Monomers specified are styrene, alpha- and ar-methyl styrenes, chlorostyrenes, divinyl benzene, mixtures of styrene and divinyl benzene, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate. The preferred dispersing medium is water, which may contain dispersing agents. The high energy irradiation used may be provided by radioactive cobalt, nuclear reactor fission products, electron beam generators and X-ray generators.
