Abstract

892,910. Cis -1,4 polybutadiene/vinyl aromatic blends. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Jan. 23, 1961 [Jan. 25, 1960], No. 2592/61. Class 2(6) A moulding composition comprises 80-98 % by weight of one or more polymerized vinylaromatic compounds and from 20-2 % by weight of a polybutadiene containing at least 90% of cis -1,4 units. The vinyl aromatic compound may by styrene vinyl toluene, vinyl xylene, vinyl ethyl benzene or vinyl chlorobenzene. The composition may be made by mechanically mixing the two homopolymer components in an internal mixer or on a two-roll mill. Alternatively the blending may be effected by graft polymerization of vinyl aromatic monomer on to preformed cis-1,4 polybutadiene. Polymerization may be carried out in bulk using heat, peroxides, ionising radiation or a combination of heat and peroxides as initiator. All agitation should be avoided after 12% conversion. Suspension techniques may also be used whereby a solution of butadiene polymer in the monomer is dispersed in water in the presence of a suitable stabilizer such as polyvinyl alcohol, gelatine, bentonite, calcium phosphate or oxalate, barium sulphate, sodium carboxy-methyl cellulose, copolymers of ethylene and maleic anhydride and polyethylene ether glycols. A catalyst such as an azo compound or a peroxide may be added and also a very small percentage of a surface active agent. About 1-6% of a lubricant such as paraffin wax or a white mineral oil may be added before polymerization. Polymer particles may be separated by the usual techniques. A mixed bulk/ suspension process may be used whereby bulk polymerization is carried out to 40% conversion and then continued by suspension. Inert ingredients such as fillers and antioxidants for polystyrene may be added.
