A vessel 2 is submerged in a biological clarification tank 1 containing sewage to be purified and treated and is in communication with the clarification tank 1 through an opening 3 which is advantageously situated at the bottom end of a funnel-like constriction 4 of the vessel 2. The immersion vessel 2 serves as a bacteria incubator and, in addition to suitable nutrient substances for the bacteria, which are introduced in any suitable manner, contains a heating device, perferably a heating coil 5. A thermostat 8, which may be of per se known construction, is advantageously provided in a connecting pipe 6 and keeps the temperature of the part of the water which is contained in the immersion vessel 2 and has been separated from the contents of the clarification tank 1 constant at about 30‹C. The immersion vessel is provided, if possible at the highest point, preferably at the apex of a cap 10 forming an inclined roof, with an opening 11, through which the gas produced by the bacteria in the immersion vessel can escape, since otherwise the bacteria would be stifled in their own gas before they spread out through openings 9. A remote thermometer 12 may be provided for checking the temperature in the immersion vessel. 13 is an equalisation tank.
