Abstract

892,724. Mixing appliances. ALGEMENE KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N. V. Dec. 15, 1959 [Dec. 16, 1958], No. 42639/59. Class 86. In an apparatus for continuously mixing and homogenizing substances of which one is a highly viscous liquid, a polymer melt and an aqueous pigment suspension are metered by pumps 8, 9 respectively and pass by a conduit 4 into a mixing chamber 1 having a rotating mixing member 2. The mixing member has sections 14 which make close contact with the wall of the mixing chamber and are axially grooved, alternating with plain cylindrical sections 13 not in contact with the chamber walls. The mixing member also has a seal 12 formed as a screw thread of opposite hand to the direction of rotation. The mixed substances are discharged through the outlet 10. According to the invention the dimensions and angular velocity of the mixing member and the rate at which the substances are pumped through the mixer are chosen so that the volume of the grooves in a grooved section is at least 3À5 times, and the volume of the clearance round a cylindrical section is at least 15 times, the volume of material passing through the apparatus per revolution of the mixing member.
