Abstract
892,346. Cleaning railway vehicles. BRITISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION. Aug. 11, 1960 [May 11, 1959], No. 16075/59. Class 138(1). A machine for cleaning the outer sides of a railway vehicle 52, Fig. 2, e.g. a diesel electric locomotive, comprises an endless belt 21, carrying cleaning flails 24, Figs. 1 and 6, and supported by a frame 6 slibably mounted on a column 5 on an undercarriage 1. The latter is driven on rails 3 by an electric motor 4, whilst the frame 6 is raised and lowered between adjustable stops (not shown) on the column 5 by a reversible electric motor 11. The machine is driven past the vehicle 52 in steps approximating to the width of the flail belt 21, the steps being controlled electrically so that each is made after a vertical stroke of the frame 6. The flail belt 21 is driven by an electric motor 26 and is suspended from a carriage 41 movable at right angles to the rails 3 by an electric motor 44 through a screw and nut mechanism 45, 46. The motors are controlled by an operator in a cabin 51, the flail belt 21 being extended and retracted as necessary by the operation of the motor 44 in order to keep the flail in contact with the surface to be cleaned. The carriage 41 also carries nozzles 34 for spraying water and/or detergent on to the surface to be cleaned, the nozzles being supplied through pipes 33 from tanks 35, 36 by pumps 37, 38. As illustrated in Fig. 2 two machines may be provided for cleaning opposite sides of the vehicle 52.
