Abstract
892,318. Thermal switches. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 14, 1958 [Aug. 17, 1957; Dec. 4, 1957], No. 26172/58. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXV] A switch for starting gas or vapour discharge tubes comprises two bimetallic strips 14, 17, arranged to deflect in the same direction when a plate-shaped heater 15, whose resistance decreases with increase of applied voltage, is energized on closure of a main switch 26. The presence of a metal strip 16 produces a thermal time lag such that contacts 20, 21 are closed by deflection of the strip 14 and subsequently opened by the strip 17, these operations being repeated if necessary until the tube strikes. In a modification (Fig. 4) the time lag is produced by a bimetal strip 36 interposed between a heater 37 and another bimetal strip 42, the strips having their high expansion sides in contact so that they deflect in opposite directions. Simpler versions of the switch have only one bimetal strip, with no ambient temperature compensation and no time lag device (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown). The switch may be arranged in a sealed casing and a spark-absorbing capacitor 29 may be arranged across the contacts. The heater may engage the high expansion side of the bimetallic element or the low expansion side. Specification 292,110 is referred to.
