Abstract
892,020. Electric blasting detonators. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. July 22, 1958 [July 26, 1957], No. 23578/58. Class 9(1). An electric detonator has a thermoplastic case 8 closed by a thermoplastic plug 1 carrying the lead wires 2 connected by a bridge wire 4 embedded in the explosive filling 9, the closure being made water tight after assembly by fus ing the plug with the case To do this a metal ring 5 or a couple of turns of wire are embedded in the peripheral surface -of the plug and the assembly of plug and case is placed coaxially within an induction coil 10. By connecting the coil 10 to an electric energy source, a current is induced in the ring 5. The heat produced softens the thermo-plastic and the plug and case fuse together. Both the plug and case may be moulded from ethylcellulose, which may be used as insulation 3 for the leads 2 and the ring 5 may be embedded in the plug during the moulding process. The ring 5 may be a nickel-chrominum-steel. Polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride-acetate, polystyrene, polyethylene, methyl styrene, acrylonitrile and polymethyl styrene are also said to be suitable thermoplastics from which to mould the case and plug.
