Abstract
1,156,883. Battery charging systems. W. GREUTERT. 27 April, 1967 [27 April, 1966; 29 April, 1966], No. 19452/67. Heading H2H. In order to prevent damage to gas tight electric storage cells the charging process is terminated, when the cells are fully charged, by means responsive to the temperature of the cell, each cell including a quantity of electrolyte insufficient to permit, on decomposition thereof, the production of a pressure which would break the cell container. A cell 5 is charged from an A.C. supply 2 by way of a transformer 1, 3, rectifier bridge 4 and a relay 18, 19. When the cell 5 is fully charged, its temperature will attain a predetermined value which is measured by a thermocouple 15 the output of which then energizes the coil 18 of the relay to open the contact 19 thereof to terminate the charging of the cell. The contact 19 is latched open by a device 20 and reclosing of the contact is effected by manual or other suitable means. The temperature sensitive device may be in the form of a resistance thermometer, a bi-metallic element or a temperature sensitive semi-conductor device. In an alternative arrangement the cell may be charged over a circuit including a thyristor. The cell may form the supply means for a battery driven electric shaver.
