891,951. Hydraulic brakes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 26, 1958 [April 2, 1957], No. 10728/57. Class 103 (1). In a.braking system having a mechanically applied brake, means is provided whereby reaction from this brake will produce hydraulic pressure to assist this braking by the operation of hydraulic braking means so that when a driven or moving element, e.g. a brake disc 1, is moving in one direction the mechanically operable braking means will operate a piston in a stationary hydraulic cylinder to pressurize the hydraulic braking system and when the driven or moving element is moving in the reverse direction the mechanically operable braking means will move a second piston in a second stationary cylinder to apply hydraulic pressure by way of the first cylinder to the hydraulic braking system. In the embodiment illustrated, a brake disc 1 has a brake band 2 arranged about its periphery and adapted to be applied by means of a pedal operated cable 4. Upon gripping the disc 1, the brake band 2 is rotated a small amount by the rotary movement of the brake disc so that a roller 7, mounted on the band, actuates one or other of two rigidly mounted cylinders 12, 13 to create hydraulic pressure in the line connected to port 15 leading to the hydraulic brake (not shown) which applies axial braking effort to the brake disc. Cylinder 13 is connected to cylinder 12 by means of pipe connection 20 so that pressure created in cylinder 13 is transmitted to cylinder 12 and thence via port 15 to the fluid-pressure-operated brake. Port 19 at the inner end of cylinder 13 is connected to a header tank (not shown) for replenishment of the system. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 809,075.
