Abstract

891,846. Change-pole machines. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 29, 1960 [Jan. 18, 1960], No. 1770/60. Class 35. A change-pole induction or synchronous machine operates by reconnecting parts of each phase winding in series or parallel with another phase winding in cyclic order with reversal of polarity of the transposed part to modify the harmonic pattern of the M.M.F. and so obtain a change in effective polenumber. In the star-connected form shown, each phase is divided into four sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 arranged in two groups I and II. In the normal connection, all the windings of each phase are connected in series. Operation of the pole-changing switches 5, 6 reconnects section 2a into phase B (and so on in cyclic order) and also reverses it. Simultaneously, section 3b (and so on) is also reversed in polarity. In a simpler form (Figs. 2 and 4, not shown), each group consists of a single winding only, one of which is transferred in cyclic order and reversed, and in a more complicated form, each phase is divided into three sections, two of which are transposed in opposite directions. Star-delta arrangements (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), are described.
