Abstract

891,383. Laying pipes. SOC. D'ETUDE DU TRANSPORT ET DE LA VALORISATION DES GAZ NATURELS DU SAHARA. Dec. 29, 1960 [Jan. 11, 1960], No. 44573/60. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XXV] In a method of laying a submarine pipe, Fig. 1, by towing this pipe over the sea bottom F by means of a traction longitudinally exerted by a traction member attached to the leading end of the pipe the stress of a traction cable 6a is transmitted to the pipe C through a chain 2 consisting of a ballasted articulated member (see Fig. 3), one end of which is connected to the end of the pipe at 1 and the other is held at a certain distance above the bottom at 3, the linear weight and the length of the chain 2 being such that the chain is capable of transmitting the tractive stress required for advancing the pipe while remaining in a tangential relationship with the sea bottom at the point of attachment between the chain and the pipe, or a point forwardly of this point of attachment. The end of the chain 2 is held at 3 by means of a chain 4 attached to a barge 5. The traction is provided by a barge 7a (or barges) hauled on anchors. A look-out turret 9 may be lowered from a barge 11 close to the head of the pipe. The chain 2 comprises stirrup-shaped links 17, 18, Fig. 3, having pivotally mounted thereon by means of pins 19 doweled at 20, square-sectioned rods 21. These rods are embedded in ballast blocks 23 of reinforced concrete protected by shielding 24 of high-gauge steel plate.
