A manure spreader comprises a longitudinal shaft 60 mounted in a body 42 the shaft being provided with a plurality of flexible elements and a guide 47 to direct material raised from the body and flung outwardly by the action of the flexible elements in rotation of the shaft, the diameter swept by the flexible elements automatically increasing to accommodate the decreasing amount of material in the body. As shown in Fig. 4 the elements each comprise a chain 64 with a drag 65. The elements may comprise two members pivoted together or a cable provided with a drag or a chain comprising a series of pairs of parallel and spaced apart links interconnected by pivot pins. The body is provided with a semicylindrical bottom 40.
