Abstract

890,491. Converting; transformers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 2, 1958 [June 4, 1957], No. 17740/57. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XXXVII] A supply system for D.C. traction motors M1, M2, includes a tapped transformer 1 and a pair of rectifier bridge systems, the tap changing system being such that it includes means to disconnect one rectifier system while its taps are being changed. As shown, a secondary winding 2 has main tappings 3, 4, 5, 6, which are connected through switches S1, S2, S3, S4 to a rectifier system of mercury arc or other rectifiers R1, R4, R5, R8, to a second rectifier system R2, R3, R6, R7. The two supply lines to the rectifier systems include transformer windings 7, 8 which have induced in them variable auxiliary voltages which have a maximum value of half that between tappings on the winding 8 and which may buck or boost the main voltage to give a fine variation. These auxiliary voltages are provided through windings 9 and 10 and switches S9-S20. Switches S21-S24 control the ignition electrodes of the rectifiers so that when a main tapping on the winding 3 is to be changed one rectifier system is rendered inoperative while the appropriate main switch in the bank S1-S8 is changed. In an alternative arrangement the appropriate rectifier system is cut-off by an arrangement which introduces excessive bucking voltage in the windings 7 or 8. In another alternative arrangement switches S21 and S24 are replaced by series switches in the supply lines. Specifications 880,378, 890,493 and 890,494 are referred to.
