Abstract

871,573. Transformers. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 17, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1957], No. 39170/57. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XXXVII] A voltage varying in steps is obtained from a transformer having a number of secondary windings 12, 13, 14 (Fig. 1) giving respectively voltages of N, 3N and 9N; which are connected singly, or in series aiding, or series opposing relationship by switches 16 . . . 19, 16a . . . 19a, 176 and 18b arranged as shown so as to provide a voltage, varying by steps of N from 0 to 13N, to the rectifier bridge 20 supplying motor 21. To minimize the magnitude and order of the harmonics developed a six-phase transformer may be employed having two or more secondary windings per phase, the smaller windings being connected across bridge circuits of switches as shown in Fig. 2. The windings are arranged in two star-connected systems interconnected by an inductor 41 and are connected to line 40 by rectifiers 38. The D.C. motor or other load is connected between line 40 and a centre tapping on inductor 41 through a contactor bridge circuit 43 by which the supply to it can be reversed. A three-phase system may be used and an A.C. load such as an electric furnace may be supplied.
