A box-folding machine has a motor 12 driving a folding tool 14 through gearing 13 and crank mechanism 16, 17, the tool being mounted on a frame 18 at an angle of about 30 degrees to the vertical and guided by columns 21 which comprise an upright 23 slidable in a fixed sleeve 22 on which distance pieces 24 support a cross-head 26 movable by the crank mechanisms. Pressure members 27, Fig. 9, and folding members 28 are fixed to two-armed levers 29 pivoted on the cross-head and carrying bolts 32, which are engaged in sinuous slots 34 in a plate 35. A cardboard blank, Fig. 8, placed on a plate 38 is forced downwards into a hollow former 19 by the members 27, the distance by which the plate 38 moves being dependent on the depth of box required and is adjusted by varying the height of the cross-head 26. This height is adjusted by means of a cap 41 bearing on the cross-head and mounted on the upright 23. At the same time the crank rod 17 is adjusted. Downward movement of the rod 23 is controlled by a brake 39. Blanks Z are fed to the machine over a sloping conveyer to the plate 38, which, at the beginning of operations, projects above the former 19. As the members 27 press on the blanks Z, the plate 38 acts as a yielding counter-thrust member and a border guide 192 bends up the edges b, c, d, e, the gussets f being folded inwards. When the members 27 reach their lowermost position, the guide slots 34 cause them to swing aside bringing the folding members 28 against the upstanding edges d, e of the blank. The edges are first bent horizontally, then inwards so that edge sections d cover sections c and sections e are pressed against the base a, the folded gussets being held between sections c and d. The cross-head then makes its return stroke and lifts the plate 38 with the finished box, which slides off under its own weight. Alternatively the box may be pushed off by mechanical means or by compressed air, the tool 14 then being arranged to operate vertically. The opposed walls b of the box may also be of double thickness produced by folding parts g and possibly gluing them to parts b before placing the blank in the machine. Tongues h gripped behind sections g may prevent unfolding.
