889,981. Making hollow ware; corrugating. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. March 17, 1960 [March 26, 1959], No. 10644/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of ribbing a thin metal cylinder for the production of cans comprises placing the cylinder over a peripherally ribbed mandrel of slightly less diameter than the interior of the cylinder and rotating the cylinder and mandrel whilst applying opposed radial pressures to shape the cylinder to the ribbed pattern of the mandrel and causing the cylinder to assume a constantly changing oval cross section the minor axis of which corresponds to the diameter of the mandrel. Cylindrical cans are formed with reinforcing ribs which may be annular, helical, longitudinal or of multiple diamond pattern. Cans are disposed on mandrels M having a corresponding rib pattern and mounted by spring-biased arms 10 pivotally on a member 11 freely rotatable about the shaft 12 to a rotating roll 1, the member 11 being driven through gearing by the shaft 12. The mandrels M are simultaneously rotated about their axes by pinions 18 engaging a gear-wheel 19 fixed to and rotatable with the shaft 12. In operation the mandrels M are moved along an arcuate path between the rotating roll 1 and a curved member 4 which is spring-biased to give the necessary ribbing pressure and also to accommodate the longitudinal rib on the can. The mandrel is slightly smaller in diameter than the can so that the cross-section of the can passes through a constantly changing oval form during ribbing. In a modification pivoted spring- biased rollers replace the member 4 and are carried on the rotating member 11. In a further modification small pivoted spring-biased rollers attached to the rotating member 11 engage diametrically opposed points on each container, the mandrels being moved in a rigidly fixed path by the member 11.
