Abstract
An anti-pernicious anaemia factor from animal stomach is prepared by isolating the fundus of the stomach from a freshly killed animal, removing by extraction with an aqueous acid or by permanent inactivation or descrustion with an aqueous alkali at least the greater part of its pepsin content and drying the residual fundus material at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. Extraction may be by aqueous hydrochloric acid or other acid at pH 3.8 and inactivation may be by aqueous sodium or potassium hydroxide at pH 8 to 10. Prior to the removal of the pepsin the muscularis and other material of the fundus is separated from the mucosa and discarded. Acetone may be added to the acid extract to precipitate solids which may be added to the residual fundus material prior to drying. The dried material may be defatted and incorporated in tablets, capsules, oral or parenteral preparations.
