Abstract

889,663. Selective printing processes. RANKXEROX Ltd. May 21, 1958 [June 6, 1957], No. 16353/58. Classes 100(2) and 100(4) An electrostatic selective printer for use with information supplied at a random rate comprises a drum 11 rotating at a constant speed and having an identical electrically interconnected ring for each character printing position of a line of print each ring 64 having raised characters 13 one of which is caused by a pulse fed to the drum 11 each revolution to impress an electrostatic image on an insulating surface of a sheet 10 under that one of electrodes 14 which is activated by a bias voltage. Magnetic marks 15 are sensed by head 16 and the voltage surges are shaped into pulses by a former 17 before being fed to a binery counter 18. Input information is fed into a storage register 23 and when one of the successive values established in the counter 18 coincides with the value held in the register 23 a pulse from the former 17 through a delay circuit 25 to the comparitor 24 is fed through a blocking oscillator 26 to the drum 11 causing the character then under the activated electrode 14 to form an image on the sheet 10. A pulse from the blocking oscillator is also fed through a delay circuit 28 to a ring counter 27 causing it to transfer the bias of the activated electrode to the next in preparation for printing therein immediately after the image has been formed. The counter 27 activates each electrode 14 in turn by transferring the bias in this way until the end of the line is reached when the bias is transferred to the beginning again this latter transfer causing an indexing mechanism 30 to advance the record paper one line of space. A buffer storage is provided for the input information so that it is not fed to the system during the time the paper is fed. A mark 20 read by a head 21 on each revolution of the drum 11 causes a pulse in the former 22 to reset the counter 18. Specifications 679,533, 693,905 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,551,582 and 2,576,047 are referred to.
