[Also in Group XXII] A torque-balanced cyclically varying drive for a pair of shafts 77, 84, particularly for driving the intergeared rotating shear blade drums 22 and balancing flywheel 36 of a machine for cutting sheet metal fed by rolls 28, comprises a constant speed shaft 37 carrying a non-circular and non-elliptical gear 74 driving similar gears 75, 76 on the respective shafts 77, 84, complete balancing of the torque surges being obtained by rotating the shafts 77, 84 with 180 degrees phase difference and by so designing the gears that the torque surges conform to a sine waveform. Formulae are given for the contour of the gears. The drums 22 have companion shear blades 24. The speed of shaft 37 relative to that of the feed rolls 28 may be varied to vary the length of strip being cut. An angularly adjustable coupling 32 is provided between the shaft 77 and drums 22 whereby according to the length of cut chosen the drums (whose speed varies cyclically) may be angularly adjusted so that during the actual shearing the speed of the shear blades is equal to the speed of the metal strip.
