Abstract
Polyethylene of density more than 0,93 is chlorinated by subjecting to gaseous chlorine at above 50 DEG C. in the presence of water and an inert solvent for the polyethylene. The polyethylene is preferably prepared by the low pressure polymerization process, e.g. using as catalysts a combination of organo-metal compounds with reducible heavy metal compounds, and preferably has a molecular weight of 20,000 to 2,000,000. The chlorination may be conducted at 100 DEG to 150 DEG C. and at superatmospheric pressures, e.g. 1,5 to 7 atmospheres, and under the action of radiation, e.g. ultra-violet light. The solvent may be carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride or chlorobenzene. The water may contain an electrolyte, p e.g. calcium chloride, sodium chloride or sodium sulphate, an azo or peroxide catalyst and an emulsifier, e.g. alkylaryl sulphonates or alkyl sulphonates. The course of the chlorination may be followed by titration of the hydrochloric acid produced in the water. The chlorinated polyethylene produced may be incorporated into polyvinyl chloride.
