Abstract
A polyolefin is chlorinated to a desired total combined chlorine content in two steps, one consisting of chlorination in suspension to derive a portion of its combined chlorine content, the other of chlorination in solution to derive the other portion of its combined chlorine content. The steps may be carried out in any order while specified polyolefins are those from ethylene, propylene or butylene which may be made by either the low or high pressure processes. The suspension chlorinating step may take place by suspending finely-divided polyolefin in an inert liquid, e.g. water to form a slurry which is agitated while being treated with chlorine at between room temperature and 5 degrees below the sintering temperature of the polyolefin preferably in the presence of a free-radical catalyst. The solution chlorinating step may take place by subjecting the polyolefin to the action of a chlorinating agent at a temperature at least that required for the solvent to dissolve 1 percent of the polyolefin and which is not in excess of that at which dehydrochlorination of the polymer occurs, in solution in a solvent which is inert to the chlorinating agent, e.g. per chloroethylene or carbon tetrachloride, and preferably using a free-radical catalyst. Specification 834,905 is referred to.
