Abstract

At least three homologous aliphatic monoolefins are reacted together in the presence of a catalyst consisting of mixtures of a compound of a metal of sub-group A of Group IV, V, VI, VII or VIII together with a compound selected from (a) an organo-metallic compound of Group I to IV, (b) a metal hydride or organometal hydride or (c) an organo-metal halogen compound. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentenes, hexenes, heptenes, octenes, nonenes, and decenes. The catalyst may be absorbed on cryolite, silica or carbon black while the usual aliphatic or aromatic solvents may be present. Both the gaseous monomers and the solvent may be added continuously and the polymer continuously removed. The polymers may be cross-linked by heating with a peroxide, e.g. dicumyl in the presence of sulphur. The usual C black, zinc oxide, stearic acid additives may be present. Methanol is used in the purification.
