Abstract

Cadmium-containing materials in the form of by-products from the sintering of ores containing zinc and lead are sulphated in an atmosphere of sulphur dioxide and air. Suitable starting materials are the lead- and cadmium-containing accretions collecting on the bars of zinc ore sintering furnaces, and the cadmium-containing lead sulphate sludge deposited in electrostatic precipitators from the gas resulting from such sintering. Such cadmium-containing material is reacted with sulphur dioxide in a rotary kiln, preferably in the presence of added ferric oxide. Temperatures of 550 DEG -650 DEG C. are employed and the atmosphere contains 2-6% sulphur dioxide. Comparative examples illustrate roasting at up to 800 DEG C. using sulphur dioxide concentrations up to 10%.
