Abstract

In the process of roasting iron sulphides according to Specification 917,480 (wherein said sulphides are roasted in suspension under such conditions as to produce magnetite and sulphur vapour formed is converted wholly to SO2 after separation from the magnetite), hematitic or magnetitic iron oxide cinders or ores are added to the sulphides to be roasted up to a limit where the exothermic reaction ceases to be self-maintaining. Any arsenic, lead, and antimony contained in the hematitic or magnetitic iron oxide charge is driven off, and the roasted product is separated from it simultaneously with the sulphur. Dust-like cinders remaining in the roaster gases after separation of the major proportion of the cinders are separated and returned to the fluidized bed. Part of the oxygen for the roasting operation is supplied in a shaft above the bed, whereby the temperature can be held higher in the shaft than in the bed. The roasting operation may be effected in the shaft.
