Abstract
888,948. Toys. MATTEL Inc. Aug. 2, 1960, No. 26754/60. Class 132(3) [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXVIII] Two wheels 25 of a wheeled toy are secured to a shaft 24 extending across the rotary toothed tune disc 11 of a musical box of the type in which tuned teeth are plucked by projections on the tune disc 11. The shaft 24 is fitted near each end with a pinion 42 meshing with the teeth 20 of the disc 11 at diametrically opposite points, the pinions 42 being driven from the shaft 24 in such a way that for one direction of rotation of the shaft on pinion drives the disc 11 and for the other direction of rotation of the shaft the other pinion drives the disc, so that the disc always turns in the same direction. Each pinion 42 forms part of a member 41 having an axially extending abutment 43 which is approached on one side by a sloping cam surface 44, the member 41 being engaged by a resilient member 45 turning with the shaft 24, so that for one direction of rotation the resilient member 45 rides up the cam surface 44 and yields to pass over the abutment 43 whereas for the other direction of rotation it engages the abutment 43 to drive the pinion 42. The disc 11 has a base with an arm on which the music comb with vibrators is mounted. The inclined ends of the vibrators lie in the path of projections extending from the disc. A pinion 22 on the base and tabs on shaft supporting brackets 26, 31 guide the disc.
