Abstract

732,401. Acrobat and musical toys. MATTELL, Inc. Jan. 1, 1954 [Feb. 18, 1953], No. 4602/53. Class 132(3). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A toy is in the form of an acrobat on a. horizontal bar and may include a musical device. As shown, the body of the figure 2 is freely pivoted to arms 8, and hands 7 are secured to a spindle 6 which is turned by means of a driving shaft 14 and an elastic band 12 which passes over pulleys 11, 13. The shaft 14 also drives a flexible belt 20 which has projections 24 adapted to pluck teeth 25 of a musical comb 26 as the belt passes round the shaft 14 and a second shaft 21 held in slots 22. When the shaft 14 is turned, the figure is first raised to the position shown, the elastic band being tensioned in run A and slack in run B. Continued rotation of the shaft 14 causes the figure to be raised slightly more, the counter torque on the spindle 6 being reduced slightly and the stored energy in the elastic band causing the spindle to turn suddenly and the figure to perform one or more somersaults. The spindle 6 may overrun the driving shaft 14 to cause tension in the run B of the rubber band, and one or more revolutions of the spindle 6 in the reverse direction may result.
