Abstract

An alkyl borate is made by preparing an admixture of a sodium and/or calcium borate salt, a polyhydric alcohol boiling within the range from 175 DEG C. to 375 DEG C., and ammonium chloride or sodium acid sulphate, distilling the mixture to separate the water therefrom until the mixture is substantially anhydrous, admixing the anhydrous mixture with a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol containing from one to three carbon atoms, distilling the reaction mixture and removing an azeotrope of the borate ester of the monohydric alcohol and the monohydric alcohol as overhead, and separating the said ester from the azeotrope. Preferred borate salts are borax, colemanite and ulexite. The preferred polyhydric alcohols are ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol and the preferred mohydric alcohol is methyl alcohol. Many other starting materials are specified. The azeotrope may be separated by such methods as fractional distillation, washing with sulphuric acid, or treatment with carbon disulphide to form an azeotrope of carbon disulphide and alcohol which is distilled from the borate ester.
