Abstract

The invention comprises: (a) compounds of the general formula <FORM:0888671/IV (b)/1> wherein n is 0 or 1 and of R and R1 one represents a hydrogen atom and the other an alkanoyloxyalkyl group; (b) the preparation thereof by esterifying the corresponding hydroxyalkyl compounds; and (c) the combination of the process of (b), when n is 0, with the preparation of the starting material by reacting a hydrazinoalkanol with an alkali metal cyanate under acid conditions and reacting the resulting hydroxyalkyl-substituted semicarbazone, or a salt thereof, with 5-nitro-2-furfuraldehyde. The products are active against micro-organisms, especially trypanosomes, penicillin-resistant bacteria, coccidia and salmonellae.
