Abstract

1,219,698. Carbanilide derivatives. L. GIVAUDAN & CIE S.A 22 Oct., 1969, No. 51745/69 Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions A5 and C5] The invention comprises carbanilide derivatives of the formula in which X denotes halogen, one R denotes hydrogen and the other R denotes an alkyl group of 2-5 carbon atoms. The compounds are obtainable (a) by reacting a 3,4-dihalophenyl isocyanate with a 3- or 4-alkylaniline; or (b) by reacting a 3- or 4-phenyl isocyanate with a 3,4- dihaloaniline. Examples of both reactions are given. The products are useful as bacteriostats (see Divisions A5 and C5). p-Isopropylphenyl isocyanate, a reagent of use in the process, is prepared by phosgenating pcumidine.
