Abstract

888,484. Indexing; filing papers. BECKER, O. A. April 8, 1958 [April,4, 1957; Sept. 5, 1957], No. 11028/58. Classes 16 and 146(1) In a file indexing system for vertical upstanding or suspended folders in fixed or movable compartments in cabinets an index for the folders, filed in each compartment, is provided adjacent the compartment and each folder has a tab on its edge bearing an identifying code symbol. As shown, the index comprises an index rail 107, Fig. 3, and slanting index strips 108 which are detachable and exchangeably arranged alongside one another within the index rail and bear the identifying code symbols and other markings associating them with individual folders 103, the rail 107 being mounted in a fixed position on a stationary part of the cabinet 101 adjacent to a related compartment so that its index strips are permanently displayed. The folders 103 carry tabs 104 arranged in ascending order in groups of ten, placed between divider plates 105. The strips 108 have transparent casings of celluloid and are loosely insertable in the rail 107. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown) interchangeable index sheets 208a, 208b, 208c are received in a removably mounted rail 207. In another modification, index leaves 92, Fig. 6 (not shown) have .horizontal perforations 94 permitting separation of single index strips 92a. Interchangeable index tabs 104a, 104b, 104c and 104d, Fig. 7, can be shaped as shown, may be differently coloured to serve as code symbols, and carry numbers corresponding to decimal numbers of given folders. Guide pockets 82, Fig. 8 (not shown) for tabs 204 are formed by welding- seams 81 across a double strip 80 of plastic. Folders 26, 27, and 84, Figs. 9, 10, and 11 respectively have tabs 4 interchangeably fitted in slits 15. A tab holder 86 Fig. 12 (not shown) is attached to a folder 303 by lugs 87 engaging slits 15.
