A reference book 1, the subject-matter of which is subdivided into a number of articles and chapters, is provided with a dual indexing system one for the articles and chapters in general and another for selected articles and chapters and one of the indexing systems corresponds to an alphabetical index 11 extending along the bottom or upper edge 10 of the book, the other indexing system comprising an index page 2 which is provided with a number of titles 3 each associated with a respective one of the selected articles or chapters. These articles or chapters are accessible by thumb cut-outs 6 disposed opposite the titles and extending from the index page to the title page of the article or chapter along the side edge 5 of the book. The alphabetical index 11 is formed by stepped index tabs 9. The thumb cut-outs 6 and stepped index tabs 9 may be replaced by projecting index tabs (not shown) and may be coloured.
