Abstract

888,371. Electrophotographic plates. HARRIS - INTERTYPE CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1958 [Feb. 15, 1957 (2)], No. 5106/58. Class 37. [Also in Group IV (a)] An electrophotographic plate is formed by applying a hydrophilic photo-conductor film to a base member from a fine dispersion of solid photo-conductive material in an acid, alkaline or neutral aqueous solution of a synthetic resinous film-forming material. Suitable photoconductive materials are those having very high dark resistivity and a surface photoconductivity of at least 10<SP>-9</SP> ohm<SP>-1</SP>/square/ watt/cm.<SP>2</SP> for a wavelength in the range 3800-7000Š, certain samples of white and pink zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, zinc sulphide, cadmium sulphide and zinc selenide being examples of such materials. Suitable filmforming materials which may be soluble only in neutral or alkaline solutions are selected from the following classes of material: polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acid and ester resins and amides, polyvinyl compounds comprising ester, hydroxyl or carboxyl groups, polymethacrylic acid vinyl acetate copolymers and polyvinyl methyl ether maleic anhydride copolymers, partially esterified or partially amide. Where it is necessary to add alkali to the water to dissolve the film-forming material volatile organic bases such as monoethylamine or aqueous ammonium hydroxide, which are removed in a subsequent drying process are used. The ratio by weight of photo-conductor to filmforming material in the dispersion should lie in the range 2 to 1 to 25 to 1, the optimum ratio depending on the type of light to which the plate is exposed. The dispersion is applied to a paper or metal base which is subsequently heat treated at 150‹ C. for about 30 minutes to remove the moisture. Specification 888,372 is referred to.
