Abstract

888,363. Floor cleaning machines; brushes. TOTEM CHEMICALS Ltd. Feb. 4, 1958 [Feb. 4, 1957], No. 3815/57. Classes 19 and 138 (1).. An applicator for liquids to wash, clean or polish floors or like flat surfaces, comprises a handle 1 carrying a pad 7, brush or like appliance, means to support a reservoir 8 outside the handle 1 including a discharge valve communicating therewith, and a control for the valve operable from the top end of the handle 1, each actuation of the control causing a controlled quantity of liquid to be expelled from the valve directly on to the surface and return of the control causing an intake through the valve of a volume of air equivalent to that of liquid dispensed. The discharge valve comprises a piston and nozzle assembly wherein a piston is reciprocable in a housing 11 communicating with the reservoir 8 by an orifice 14, sealed off by an upper valve 27 carried by the assembly when the latter is moved a certain distance towards it, a lower valve 29 through which liquid is expelled opening on further movement in the same direction, a spring being then compressed and holding the valve 29 closed during subsequent movement of the piston 20 away from the orifice 14, so that undischarged liquid in the region of the nozzle 21 is drawn through it into the housing 11. The control comprises a rod 31 within the handle 1 connected to the discharge valve by a lever 34 and to a plunger 32 having a stop 33. According to the Provisional Specification the reservoir 8 has a filling aperture with a cap at the top and has an indented-wall forming a recess for securing it to the handle by metal straps.
