Abstract

888,330. Lathes. SCHUTTE, A. H., COMMER, G., WELCKER, L., THEN, E., and PECHMANN, E. F., VON, [trading as SCHUTTE, ALFRED H.]. Aug. 14, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 25684/57. Class 83 (3). In a multi-spindle automatic lathe, means is provided for disengaging the drive to the spindle 11 at a predetermined station, applying a brake 25 to the spindle, releasing the brake and rotating the spindle slowly until it is stopped by a locking device 62 for operation of the jaw-chuck 14 by the motor 20 which effected slow-rotation of the spindle. During machining, the spindle is rotated through a friction coupling 12, loaded by a slidable collar 24 on the spindle, and disengaged by movement of the collar against the fixed brake 25. The collar is moved by a rotating cam-drum 28, through a lever 36, a resilient link 37, 66 and a slider 38 movable on rods 34 and having a rigid connection 39 with an annular recess 40 in the collar 24. A further cam 29 on the drum 28 advances the chuckoperating mechanism 61, through a similar linkage 31, 65, 32, 33, 35, towards a flange 90 on the end of the spindle. A projection 78 on the lever 31 engages a member 67 carried by the slider 38, thus displacing the slider to release the brake 25. This displacement defleets the spring 66, Fig. 2, which offers less resistance than spring 65. If the locking teeth 62 on a sleeve 60 in the mechanism 61 do not engage corresponding grooves in the flange 90, contact between the teeth and flange presses the sleeve into the casing of the mechanism, against the pressure of a spring 45. A flange 68 on the sleeve moves, and thus couples at 70, a sleeve 69 with a sleeve 71 which has internal teeth 72 meshing with a pinion 77 driven by a gear 76 on a shaft 75 coupled to the electric motor 20, which is started as a contact 74 is closed by a rod 73 displaced by the sleeve 60. The sleeve 69 is coupled to a sleeve 64 which engages a friction disc 63 on the flange 90, thus rotating the spindle until the teeth 62 enter the grooves in the flanges, the return movement of the sleeve 60 disengaging the coupling 70 and stopping the motor 20. Chuck operation.-Clutch-teeth 80 on the end of the shaft 75 are urged by a spring 79 against teeth on a shaft having a clutch 18 to engage and rotate a nut 17 engaging screw-threads on a two-part chuck-operating draw-spindle 15, 16.
