Abstract
A stable aqueous emulsion of a polyvinylacetal is produced by converting a moist polyvinylacetal, in which the aldehyde component is a straight or branched chain aliphatic aldehyde containing at least eight carbon atoms, or a moist polyvinylacetal, obtained by copolymerizing a vinyl ester with an unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid containing one or two carboxyl groups followed by at least partial hydrolysis of the ester groups and reaction of the free hydroxyl groups formed with an aldehyde, to a plastic state by heating and milling at a temperature of 100 DEG -140 DEG C., cooling the mass and adding water slowly with agitation to the mixture obtained. The acid may be acrylic, crotonic, fumaric, maleic or itaconic acid. The emulsifying agents may be the alkali-metal and the ammonium salts of long-chain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid, stearic acid, linolic acid, palmitic acid, lauric acid; and alkyl aryl sulphonates and polyglycol ether sulphonates, which may be employed with or without the addition of protective colloids such as polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, sodium caseinate, albumen, dextrin, sodium cholate, gum tragacanth, saponin, gum arabic, and water-soluble cellulose derivatives. Specified emulsifying agents are sodium oleate, sodium linolate, sodium palmitate, sodium stearate, sodium laurate, and polyethylene glycol ether sulphonate. The preferred aldehydes are butyraldehyde and caprylic aldehyde. The resulting emulsions may be converted into films and used as an intermediate layer in the manufacture of laminated safety glass.
