An electrophoresis apparatus of the Tiselius type is modified in that each collimator K1, K2 consists of a mirror lens objective with double internal reflection so as to reduce the overall length of the apparatus. As shown, each collimator comprises a plano-convex lens A, having at its centre a convex mirror C. and a Mangin mirror B. In order to provide adequate correction each collimator is used in conjunction with a two element corrector D, E.
