Abstract

887,970. Valve gears; lubricating. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 16, 1960 [Nov. 23, 1959], No. 39320/60. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). A rocker arm 30, Fig. 1, pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and actuated at one end from the engine, e.g. via a cam-shaft, has at its other end, a bridge member 32 pivotally connected intermediate its ends and having at each end a pallet portion 38 engaged with a poppet valve stem 18. The bridge 32 may be stamped and formed from steel plate and then heat treated and hardened. A rocker arm 36 Fig. 2, can be formed, e.g. by brazing or riveting, from stampings 36<SP>1</SP> and 36<SP>11</SP> having openings 33<SP>1</SP>, 39<SP>1</SP> and 43<SP>1</SP> in which are pressfitted bushes 33, 39 and 43. Engine lubricant is supplied via passages 28, 41 to a radial passage 41<SP>1</SP> in a hollow shaft 41 which carries the bush 39. During pivotal movement of the rocker 36, registration of the passages 39<SP>11</SP> and 41<SP>1</SP> allows lubricant to flow along passages 37<SP>1</SP> and 37<SP>11</SP> to the radial ports 33<SP>11</SP> and 43<SP>11</SP> to lubricate hollow pivot pins 35 and 45 which are secured in the aligned openings by riveting over the pivot pin ends. At the pivotal connection 34, lubricant drains downwardly on to the pallets 38 and therefrom to lubricate the engaged surfaces of the pallets 38 and the valve stems 18. In a modification a rocker arm 136, Fig. 4, is fabricated from a single sheet metal stamping which is folded to each side of a centre line, and has a limit stop arm 147 and a limit stop boss 149 which prevent excessive pivotal movement of the bridge 32.
