Abstract

887,586. Circuits employing bi-stable magnetic elements. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 11, 1958 [July 12, 1957], No. 22319/58. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XIX] A pulse frequency dividing circuit comprises a pair of cores A, B, Fig. 1, each having two windings WA1, WA2 and WB1, WB2, the turns of which are dissimilar, the windings WA1, WB1 being connected in series in the same magnetizing sense to a source of negative pulses NG, while the windings WA2, WB2 are connected in series in opposite magnetizing senses to a source of positive pulses PG, a third winding WA3 acting in the same sense as winding WA1 on core A being also connected to the positive pulse source. The pulses PG, NG may be derived from a common input and are applied alternately, the winding with the larger number of turns in the relevant series path taking priority in reversing the magnetic state of the associated core, if the state is such as to be reversible. A reversal of state of a core limits the current in the series path so that the magnetic state of the other core is unaffected. Assuming that the cores are both initially in state " 0," then a sequence of core reversals takes place as shown in Fig. 3, the winding WA3 being operative during the first positive pulse to switch core A to state " 1 " and during the second positive pulse to inhibit switching of core A by current in winding WA2. A single output pulse for a total of two positive and two negative input pulses may be derived from windings (not shown) on each core. Alternatively, outputs may be taken from a terminal UA, UB or UK. In a modification, Fig. 4, an additional core C with windings WC1, WC2 respectively connected in the two series paths is provided. In this arrangement a resistor R3 is provided across which a switching voltage is developed at the stage when the impedance of winding WC2 is low to a positive pulse. The two pulses in this case are provided by an alternating supply over respective rectifiers G1 and G2. The pattern of core switching as the application of pulses proceeds is shown in Fig. 5. Output windings (not shown) may be provided on cores B and C or outputs may be derived from resistors in series with windings WA1 or WA2.
