Abstract

Thiophenes are produced by treating aliphatic hydrocarbons having at least 2 carbon atoms with sulphur or volatile sulphur compounds at elevated temperature in the presence of a compound of a metal of the 5th, 6th 7th or 8th Group of the Periodic Table as catalyst and of an inert gas, the volume of inert gas used being at least equal to the volume of the gaseous hydrocarbon. The inert gas may be, for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen, or steam a gas mixture containing carbon dioxide and/or nitrogen such as a combustion gas, or a waste gas originating from the process. Suitable catalysts are, for example, compounds of vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, iron and cobalt, which are preferably deposited on a carrier such as active alumina. The preferred starting materials are C4 hydrocarbons especially linear unsaturated hydrocarbons. Suitable volatile sulphur compounds are sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, ammonium sulphide, carbon oxysulphide, mercaptans and thioethers. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature in the range 400 DEG C.-1,000 DEG C.
