Abstract

In a temperature-responsive actuating element (see Group XIII) for operation between 250 DEG F. and 400 DEG F., the thermal expansion of tetrachlorobenzene, tetrabromobenzene, tribromobenzene, or a mixture of at least two of these, including copper or aluminium particles in a container, flexes a diaphragm which closes the container. Movement of the diaphragm is transmitted to a piston by a body of material comprising particles of polytetrafluoroethylene, polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene or nylon, dispersed in a flowable polysiloxane, e.g. including dimethyl and diphenyl polysiloxanes, or particles of either of the first two substances named or of any polyamide dispersed in polyethylene, polybutene or polyisobutylene. The material may include butadiene acrylonitrile or graphite.ALSO:In a temperature-responsive actuating-element (see Group XIII), thermal expansion of one material is transmitted to a piston by a body of another material comprising particles of polytetrafluoroethylene, polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene or nylon, e.g. 75-90% by volume, dispersed in a flowable polysiloxane, e.g. including dimethyl and diphenyl polysiloxanes, or particles of either of the first two substances named or of any polyamide, e.g. 60-95%, dispersed in polyethylene, polybutene or polyisobutylene, which may also include butadieneacrylonitrile or graphite. The material may be compounded by mixing resinous particles with the polysiloxane in solution, e.g. in xylene, and then driving off the solvent.
