Abstract

A polyolefin is stabilized with a compound <FORM:0886218/IV (a)/1> wherein X and Y are -NR9R10, -OR9, -SR9 or -OC(O)R9 and each of R1 10 are hydrogen or C1 to C20 hydrocarbon radicals and at least one of R1-8 is a hydrogen atom attached to a tertiary carbon atom. Polyolefins specified are those derived from ethylene, propylene, butene, isobutylene, hexene and/or octene, and of the many stabilizers disclosed those preferred are sorbide, sorbide dibenzyl ether, di(dimethyl amino) sorbide, dianiline sorbide, diamino sorbide, sorbide dimethyl ether and sorbide diacetate. Conventional inhibitors also may be present and several phenols, amines and organic sulphur compounds are specified. The stabilized polyolefins have colour stability even at degradation temperatures, thereby enabling polyolefins of reduced molecular weight to be obtained. Applications specified are film, sheet, containers and tubular goods.
