Overload of a circular saw blade S moves a worm shaft 4 in the blade drive against the action of an adjustable cup spring 28 and a switch E is opened so that an electro-magnetic clutch 7 in the drive from a motor 8 is uncoupled and a stop valve Sp blocks the return side of hydraulic saw feed cylinders Z. A line l from the work clamp cylinder V is connected to a switch D in the control circuit so that the switch is open and the stop valve Sp is in blocking position until the pressure in the clamp cylinder reaches a pre-determined value. The hydraulic feed and clamping system is provided with change-over valves H 1 , H 2 , a relief valve ³, a rate of feed regulator R and a counter-pressure regulator G by which the rate of feed of the saw is automatically reduced as the resistance to cutting increases. When the saw drive and feed have been stopped owing to overload, the valve H 1 is changed over to withdraw the saw and the switch E closes to restore the circuit to the relays C 1 and C 2 of the clutch and stop valve. When the fault has been cleared, the switch T is operated to bring in the relay C 1 of the clutch and restore the drive.
